Character sketch - Kaela ("scout") Simon Knowles Macro Kaela (kah-eh-lah or keh-la) is a small girl around twelve or thirteen. She is firmly built, for a child just about to enter adolescence. Her physical body is not very mature, but her small size allows her to be quick, light, and very fleet of foot. Her young eyes betray her mental maturity, and she handles herself in a very logical manner, although she keeps a light and vivacious humor. When focused, her mind is very sharp and she is remarkably intelligent for such a youngster. (That's what the elders think, at least.) She is lucky severalfold: She can logically assess situations very rapidly, she has very quick and snappy reactions, and her ability to sense the prescence of dangerous things nearby is not only uncanny but invaluable. As for a facial description: She has bright green eyes, which usually have a mischievious sparkle in them, as per her behaviourial characteristics. She has shoulder-length black hair which is almost uniform in length all around, except for her face, which is only long enough to cover her forehead. Her face is small and slightly gaunt, but very bright, usually because of the cheery smile that is nearly perpetually present. In physical stature, she is about four feet tall, about the same size as Janus. As her body is still not starting to develop into that of a fully-grown woman, she has the thin, gangly appearance that is characteristic of children her age. She is a fiercly independant child, having great control over her life at such a young age. She was raised by her parents, like a normal child, in a good environment. One day, while on a communal hunting trip, a fatal accident killed both her parents, and she was forced to abandon them. Something hardened in her heart that day, and it marked the end of a carefree and innocent childhood. She had to take care of herself from now on. Her first test in this new-found self-dependance was to survive to return to the village. Many hard lessons were learned in the day and a half before she returned, alone. Very quickly, and just as irriversible, she had gone from carefree and innocent child, to self-reliant and mature adult, although she had not even come of age. Her history is revealed when she takes Janus on a hunting trip, very close to the area her parents were killed. After they go to bed, Kaela re-lives her parents' deaths in a dream, and she wakes up with a scream, Janus kneeling beside her.
