Date: Fri, 4 Feb 1994 12:55:08 EST From: David Campitelli Subject: ADND-L:who's who update First of all, Geoffrey Matthrews asked the question" Exactly how do high level wizards make powerful items?" There are several methods. If you do not want an indepth adventure soley for the purpose of creating the item then wish and limited wish spells can make up the effects and then you can make them permanent. Otherwise you need to either A) find some phenomenon in nature that has a similar circumstance. Ex to create a life stealing weapon you may need the heart of a vampire a bone from a dracholich and a gem from the quasi elemental plane of minerals with some negative matter in it. The book of artifacts has a good method for creating these itmes. There should always be at least one obscure ingrediant. I have a wizard who is 14th level and wants to create a staff of power I had a friend dm think up a list of ingrediants to get. That was a year and a half ago and I am still looking, but it is a lot of fun trying to find the "idea of a willow wisp " The second way is to research a spell that will produce the desired effect ( a slow process in itself ) and then enchant the item with this new spell . You might be able to reduce the research time if you itend the spell to be only for the enchanting of items. Ex:I once knew a 9th level wizard who was reknown for creating permanent versions of magic mouth, unseen servant, audible glamor, dancing lights , etc. but he couldn't get the permancy spell. It turned out he researched the spells as fourth and fifth level spells but the effects were permanent but could only be cast upon prpared items. It doesn't take as long as enchant item and does not require permancy. Now for the wizards: Todays installments will be wizards from waterdeep and the north. ( whoever asked me for the stats of Vecna I am still working on it ) Lady Alethene Moonstar ( CG hf w19; an archlich ) she has the ability to turn her undead status and powers on and off at will. Sge usually carries a staff in public that is reputed to be a staff of the magi. She often wanders the city disguised as an old crone, and has been known to teach a party of adventurers or two a lesson about teasing or tormenting the "ugly old lady". Narthindlar of the Nine Spells ( LN hm w12; INT 18, WIS 16, CON 16 ) Narthindlar is a wizard who loves magic concerned with growing things, and has a fondness for lemons. She was once the apprentice of one of the last Netherese sorcerers ( who was killed by a cabal of Ilithiliches ) Before he dies he had researched a spell Ioulaum's longevity, which would extend the lifespan of the caster but one spellcaster must die for each year of extra life. She used the spell and exterminated a colony of mindflayers over 2000 strong, she then destroyed all records of the spell. This was near a thousand years ago. Now she is secretive and very protective she has developed a spell Dragon shape. Dragonshape ( alteration ) Range: 0 Level: 9 ( assumed ) components: V S,Casting time 9 Area of effect: caster or one person duration 1 turn / level ( arrgghh) Saving throw: none This spell allows the caster to assume the form of any dragon the caster has personally seen. It grants all powers and abilities of that dragon type. Spells can be cast while in dragon shape and take no material components. Items are still in effect while in dragon shape ( if they are activated before the change or are continuous ) after the change only items that be activated by altered speech and manipulative with claws can be used. The change is instantaneous and effects the person as a heal spell. Changing back also returns half of any lost hit points. After using this spell several times she has gained the reputaion of being a gold dragon in disguise as a human.
